MLK Social Action Shabbaton: The Current State of Intolerance in America

TI’s annual tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. highlighted efforts to combat poverty and the growth of intolerance in America.

Following the Friday evening service and dinner, Katy Joseph from the AVODAH Alumni Justice Ambassador Program led a discussion on Working to End Intolerance: Direct Service & Root Causes, a program that places direct service efforts within the broader context of systemic intolerance and inequality.

On Saturday, the program shifted focus to intolerance and racism. Lecia Brooks, Outreach Director for the Southern Poverty Law Center, delivered a drash during morning services. After lunch, a panel identified issues affecting communities that have been the target of intolerance. Ms. Brooks moderated a panel that included TI member Ira Forman, formerly president Obama’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism and G. Derek Musgrove, Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who has written articles and books on post–civil rights era black politics.
