At TI, you’ll find a diverse, egalitarian, participatory community with a “come as you are,” welcoming personality. We offer various opportunities for prayer, learning, and celebration for people of all ages. We follow traditional tefillah (prayer), with a willingness to experiment and learn, and hold special services for tots and young people. The membership is deeply committed to building and sustaining the community, and we love to spend time together, especially over food. Weekly Shabbat services normally have about 125 attendees, and are followed by a delicious Kiddush lunch where everyone has a chance to schmooze at length and keep up with the important events in each other’s lives.

Together we take pride in caring for those in need within the congregation, while at the same time seeking ways to address and raise awareness of broader social issues in our neighborhood and beyond. Our Helping Hands Committee tends to bikkur cholim (taking care of the sick) needs and celebrate life cycle events, and an equally active Funeral Practices Committee supports families at the time of death. Additionally, our Social Action Committee embodies our progressive concern for the community and world around us.

Drawing from the greater Washington community, our members bring to the congregation a fascinating range of professional skills, intellectual interests and strengths—not the least of which being considerable musical talent. We do not have a professional chazzan (cantor) and our services are primarily led by congregants. Similarly, drashot (sermons) are often presented by members or special guests.

Being a TI member means more than just attending our services. As a TI member , you’ll gain the support of our rabbi, staff and entire congregation.
