The Global Reach of the Yiddish Theater—The Vilna Troupe, God of Vengeance, and Yiddish Performance the World Over

TI member Andrew Reamer will host a viewing of this recorded presentation by the Yiddish Book Center in which Professor Debra Caplan and performer Caraid O’Brien discuss Yiddish theater as it was performed during its heyday in the twentieth century. Debra follows the many branches of the world-famous repertory company the Vilna Troupe, tracing where they performed. Caraid discusses the evolution of Sholem Asch’s Yiddish classic God of Vengeance from its 1907 debut in Berlin to eventual Broadway scandal in 1923.

Becoming Elijah: Prophet of Transformation - A conversation with author Daniel Matt
Delve into the of life of Elijah. In the Tanakh, Elijah is a zealous prophet, when his earthly life ends, he vanishes in a whirlwind, carried off to heaven in a fiery chariot. Was this a spectacular death, or did Elijah escape death entirely? The latter view prevailed. How did this zealot turn into a compassionate hero—apparently the most popular figure in Jewish folklore? Join the discussion and explore this question, tracing how Elijah develops from the Bible to Rabbinic Judaism, Kabbalah, and Jewish ritual.
