Kol Nashim members Carolivia Herron, and Ruth Shapiro both have stories to tell that come from published books about heroes in their family. Ruth explains "My father's family was the last Jewish family to leave Koenigsberg, Germany alive [after the Nazi takeover]." Carolivia's ancestor, Mary Lumpkin, is featured in The Devil's Half Acre, an epic tale of a powerful woman who emerged from slavery and created opportunities for her children after the Civil War.
